Physiotherapy plays a key role in the rehabilitation of back and neck pain within our clinics and your initial spinal assessment will routinely be a 40 minute appointment with one of our specially trained Physiotherapists. The therapist will ask you key questions relating to your back pain and the effect the pain has on your activity. The Physiotherapist will also examine the movement of your spine, your posture, and you will receive a routine neurological examination. After the assessment your Physiotherapist will spend time with you to discuss your back problem and he/she will prescribe some gentle exercises and/or rest positions to immediately help relieve your pain and improve your mobility.

Back pain can take time to improve and your Physiotherapist may need to see you for a short series of treatments to help ease your pain and relieve stiffness in your spine. We aim to teach our clients how to self manage their back problem so you wont need regular ongoing treatment however a short period of Physiotherapy can give substantial benefit to help ease your pain and restore the normal movement of your spine. Your Physiotherapists will discuss a number of treatment options to help relieve your back problem that may include any of the following:

  • Joint mobilisation
  • Joint manipulation
  • Acupuncture or acupressure
  • Massage
  • Stretches
  • Exercise Prescription

Once your pain has settled you will quickly progress through a structured programme of gentle exercises that have been specifically designed by The Back Institute to steadily improve the strength of your back and stomach muscles so that you can get back into the activities you enjoy. If your back problem is not improving as expected, your Physiotherapist may refer you to one of our orthopaedic spine surgeons for further investigation and specialist input.
